FERN at Home – Online Video Course for Young People
Everyone worries. Learn to spot it early and know what to do next.
A friendship problem, a test, a new school or simply getting through the door can suddenly feel enormous when anxiety takes over.
FERN at Home helps children and teenagers understand what worry is doing and gives them a practical way to respond.
Across four short videos, Kim McCabe guides children through FERN, a simple and memorable process for recognising anxiety, recovering enough calm to think, and finding a manageable way forward. A fifth video is especially for parents and teachers, helping them understand FERN and support young people to use it.
FERN does not tell children to stop worrying or insist that everything will be fine. It helps them discover that they can feel wobbly and still carry on.
What you’ll receive
- Four short videos for young people, plus a fifth for parents and teachers, with accompanying activities, taking around an hour altogether
- A downloadable FERN activity booklet
- Simple exercises that can be returned to whenever they are needed
- Practical language that children, parents and teachers can use together
FERN at Home is for girls and boys. A younger child may like to watch with a parent or another trusted adult alongside them. A teenager may prefer to explore it alone, at their own pace, and share as much or as little as they choose.
The fifth video gives parents and teachers their own introduction to the approach, so they can understand what the young person has learned and use the same language when anxiety appears.
Testimonials
“FERN gave us words we can both use when worry takes over. Instead of rushing to reassure my daughter, I now know how to help her find her next step.”
Parent of an 11-year-old
“I liked that it didn’t tell me not to worry. It showed me what I can do when I am worried.”
Young person, aged 14
“It is simple enough for children to remember, without making anxiety seem simple.”
